Dental crowns cover a tooth. They're referred to as a cap that is placed over your tooth to protect your tooth, increase your tooth's ability to function without pain, and provide a better appearance for a decayed or damaged tooth. The goal of a crown is to improve the shape, strength, functionality, and appearance of your original or implanted tooth. When you get a crown or crowns, you'll be able to use your teeth to chew again without further damaging the sensitive area beneath the crown. Your tooth and/or teeth will also look better because the crown functions as a new tooth. Crowns protect the vulnerable soft center of your tooth, called the pulp chamber, by helping to reinforce the hard outer layer of the tooth (called the dentin), and protect the inner layer or pulp where your tooth contains nerve endings, blood vessels and connective tissue. A crown covers the fragile areas of the inner tooth and shields it from damage, while often providing a cosmetic "new tooth" appearance as well.
Porcelain crowns are better than metal crowns because they look more natural and they don't cause the teeth to become darker. Porcelain crowns are made of ceramic materials that are designed to look like natural teeth. They can be matched to the color of your existing teeth, so they will blend in seamlessly with your smile. Metal crowns, on the other hand, can cause the teeth to become darker over time as the metal oxidizes. In addition, porcelain crowns are stronger and less likely to break than metal crowns. They also last longer, so you won't have to worry about needing a new one every few years.

Prevention
Many people only go to the dentist when they have a painful tooth or some other obvious symptom. Learn more about our dental services here. Prevention, though, may be the most important service we provide. Of course, prevention starts with routine brushing and flossing in the home. The addition of regular preventative measures such as: cleanings, x-rays, sealants, and other methods can prevent a tooth from being damaged in the first place, saving you discomfort and costly dental care.
At Steamboat Advanced Dentistry & Implant Center, we encourage you to make it a point to get your teeth cleaned at least every six months. Many of our patients—young and old—are able to avoid serious and costly tooth and gum issues simply through good preventative measures.
Diagnosis
By employing the latest in digital x-ray technology and other diagnostic methods, we will give you an accurate diagnosis should a problem arise. Our digital x-ray system is far more detailed and emits lower radiation than traditional equipment. For more advanced procedures, we use a 3D imaging machine to get even more detailed information.
Problems can often be identified and diagnosed during a regular cleaning. At other times, you may need to contact us as dental issues become noticeable. Either way, we will give you a diagnosis based on the latest oral health research and work with you on a plan to fix the problem.
